Final Wednesday's Hair Growth Tip!

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 26 August 2009 | 08:30

10. Take your multivitamins!

I'm sure many of you have heard this before, so this may just be a reminder. For optimal hair growth, our body needs adequate nutrients from the foods we eat. Halt! Did you know that canned and frozen vegetables and fruits contain fewer vitamins than fresh vegetables and fruits? Did you know that boiled, steamed (yes, steamed), and microwaved veggies contain fewer nutrients than raw veggies? The same is true for certain meats, dairy products, etc. Therefore, it is possible that some of us are not absorbing sufficient nutrients from the "healthy" foods we do eat. With that being said, be sure to purchase and prepare your food for optimal nutrient absorption, or at the very least, invest in a good multi-vitamin to make up for that slack.

9. Get adequate sleep!

Sleep is an opportunity for the body to recuperate from a day's worth of activities and stress. Without this resting process, our body -- including our hair -- may suffer. According to one study, "losing sleep for even part of one night can trigger the key cellular pathway that produces tissue-damaging inflammation." In other words, insufficient sleep can be detrimental to our health. What does this mean for hair growth? Well, healthy growing hair begins with a healthy lifestyle, and adequate sleep is a part of a healthy lifestyle. For your hair to reach its optimal growing potential, be sure to rest up!

7. Eat Sufficient Protein.

Our hair is mainly comprised of keratin, a type of protein. Without a source of amino acids for building keratin, hair growth and thickness will suffer. For that reason, a diet sufficient in protein is critical for hair formation.

Not so fast! Don't go downing several pounds of red meat to get your fill of protein for the day. Instead, consume healthier alternatives -- such as the foods in the list that follows. Also, be careful not to absorb excessive portions of protein relative to other essential nutrients in your diet; health risks, such as kidney disease, osteoporosis, and heart disease can result. Read the first few links below to determine whether you are getting enough of protein.

5. Essential Oil Massage.

DISCLAIMER: Essential oils are very potent. Please consult your doctor before using them, especially if you are pregnant, breast feeding, or have a medical condition. Additionally, please do sufficient research before making your own mixture.

According to the results of one study, daily massaging of the scalp with an essential oil mixture proved effective in treating alopecia areata when compared to massaging with carrier oils alone. The reason for the improvement in hair growth is unclear - perhaps aromatherapy is beneficial to reducing stress? The speculated cause of alopecia areata is an attack on the hair cells by the immune system. Some believe that stress may aggravate the condition.

So, what does the study's conclusion mean for other hair loss disorders? One may wonder if a daily application of an essential oil mixture may work against traction alopecia or relaxer-induced alopecia, for example. There is also the question of whether aromatherapy can accelerate slow hair growth. For the time being, aromatherapy as a hair loss treatment or growth aid remains a debatable topic in the research community. It couldn't hurt, however, to incorporate it into your hair care regimen and perform your own personal study (assuming you've heeded the disclaimer).

4. Drink green tea!

I was on a hair care site not too long ago when I first read that green tea has been shown to enhance hair regrowth. A skeptic at first, I decided to see what research I could find on the topic. Amazingly, there are some studies that have suggested a connection between green tea and hair regrowth. Apparently, the growth is linked to the polyphenolic compounds -- which are antioxidants -- contained in green tea. Applying green tea topically or consuming it may prove beneficial. Further research may need to be performed, but the results of current studies are hopeful. For continued reading, check out the links below. In the mean time, drink your green tea ... if not for hair growth, drink for body health. (Antioxidants have also been linked to reducing oxidative stress, which has been associated with cancer and other diseases.)

3. Exercise

Though I have found no research on the topic, it is a belief of mine that regular exercise helps with optimal hair growth. After all, exercise increases blood circulation in certain sections of the body, such as the skin of the head. Increased blood circulation in this region may allow for more nutrients to reach the follicles. The more these follicles are fed, the more they flourish.

Years ago, I found this to be true while having a difficult time maintaining a fresh perm as an active member of a track-and-field team. Constant cardiovascular workouts alternated with weightlifting repetitions followed by an immediate abundance of new growth. Now, maybe my hair grew faster back then because I was younger. (Hair growth does slow down with age.) Or perhaps it was reversion. (Nope. My hair was growing more than it was reverting.) Or the possibility could lie in each follicle merely receiving food to its heart's content due to exercise. I'm inclined to believe the latter most explanation. Exercise!

2. See a Doctor Regularly.

Certain medical conditions can be the root of slow hair growth, but you won't know for sure until you visit a doctor. Here are a few examples:

*Iron deficiency anemia - click here to read about it
*Folic acid deficiency anemia - click here to read about it
*Vitamin B-12 deficiency anemia - easily developed in women; click here to read about it
*Hypothyroidism (a thyroid condition) - click here to read about it

Mild forms of these conditions can go unnoticed and undiagnosed, yet affect the hair. Stay on top of your annual physicals and doctor visits!

1. Maintain a clean scalp.

In my opinion, keeping your scalp clean is just as critical to hair growth as your diet and genetics. A filthy scalp is more prone to fungal and bacterial infections that may adversely affect the follicle -- the area where hair growth begins. Pollutants, product buildup, sweat, and dead skin cells can contribute to the filth. Thus, maintaining good hygiene when it comes to the scalp is essential. Here are a few tips:

*Be sure to wash your hair regularly remembering to also cleanse the scalp.
*Minimize the use of products directly on the scalp, especially those containing pore-clogging ingredients.
*Cleanse your scalp after intense, sweaty workout sessions.
*If you perspire profusely on hot, humid days, chances are your scalp has accumulated some sweat buildup. Cleanse your scalp on these days as well.
*SIDE NOTE: Avoid scratching the scalp while washing; this action can open up the scalp to infections as well.
